When we accept Christ as our Savior, we receive the Holy Spirit. It is through relationship with the Holy Spirit that we begin to produce “fruit”… love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control. (Galatians 5). If we are producing this type of good fruit, then we know that we are drinking nurture from the Holy Spirit, God’s Word, creation, healthy relationships, generational blessings, etc.
However, sometimes in our lives there is fruit that is inconsistent with the fruit of the Holy Spirit, and unbecoming a child of God… addictions, fears, compulsions, angers, resentments, bitterness, broken relationships, inability to fully come into our true identity and walk in our destiny, lack of power in our Christian life, etc. If there is that type of “fruit” in our life, then we know that in that area, we must be drinking nurture from something else… and that something else is usually a pool of bitterness, anger, unresolved issues and unresolved trauma. Jesus said that this type of “fruit” comes from the heart (Mt. 15:18)… and so it is to the heart that we need to go….
In prayer ministry, we do not deal with past issues! If something is truly past, there will be no present-day bad fruit resulting from it—it will have been resolved: forgiveness released, the heart healed, sinful responses recognized and brought to death on the Cross through confession and repentance. No matter how difficult or how painful the event was, when healed, it becomes a part of our testimony; part of our overcoming!
However, if there is present-day bad fruit in our life, then we ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where that bad fruit is coming from. Often bad fruit can be traced to bad roots, i.e., judgments, inner vows, unforgiveness, resentments, and lies adopted into our belief systems earlier in life.
During prayer sessions, we:
· Recognize the fruit
· Recognize the root…if there is bad fruit, there must be a root
· Recognize the wound, and invite Jesus to heal
· Recognize and bring to the Cross through confession and repentance sinful responses to what has happened
· Release forgiveness
· Reckon the sin dead on the Cross
· Learn to walk in the disciplines of new life
As the Blood of Jesus, the Cross, and the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ are applied to the deep wounds and practices of the heart, and as we allow God’s faithfulness to complete the work He has already begun, healing and wholeness result. (Philippians 1:6)
